Caladium Hilo Beauty

Caladium Hilo Beauty

Caladiums are heat-loving perennials with beautiful foliage that makes a showy houseplants. The plant's large, arrow-shaped, paper-thin leaves come in a striking array of colors and patterns. A mass of caladium is an explosion of whites, greens, reds, and pinks that are mottled, veined, and striped. They can easily substitute planted flowers. As striking as they are, take note that caladiums are toxic to animals and humans when ingested. When grown indoors, they do best with lots of heat, bright but indirect light, and plenty of humidity. Even under the best conditions, caladium foliage lasts only a few months before the leaves start to die back, which is normal.

Avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight. An area with bright indirect light would be best.

You will get the best performance and healthiest growth from well-aerated soil that drains quickly. Heavy soil has a tendency to retain too much moisture, which can lead to rot problems and even plant death.

Alocasia Amazonica can usually be found growing near a source of water where their roots stay moist. Therefore, it is important to water frequently enough to keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. If the top 2cm is starting to feel dry to the touch, apply water until it runs from the pot’s bottom drain holes.

Use a well-balanced liquid fertilizer or a liquid blend for houseplants and apply every two to four weeks at half-strength. If the potting mix you used to create the soil mixture contained a slow-release blend, you probably won’t have to apply any additional fertilizer application for several months. Always follow the fertilizer’s package instructions.
